Before you read this entry, I need you to go back and reread “Have you invited God into your job search?”
http://innovativeoutsourcing.wordpress.com/2009/12/06/have-you-invited-god-into-your-job-search/, a blog I wrote almost 2 years ago. You need to understand the way the story started to appreciate the ending. God answered an urgent prayer for me and my husband through removing a job opportunity from our path. I never told you that day how things ended with his job search, and now I believe God is calling me to finish my story.

About a month after the hotel offer was rescinded, my husband was made aware of a job opportunity here in Atlanta. A former colleague of mine shared with us that a Fortune 500 company was interviewing for a Director of Talent. My husband quickly applied for the job. After a few days, he was told they were no longer accepting applicants and that they had identified the one with which they were going to be moving forward with. If you have ever received this type of news yourself, you know you always think things like… if I had only gotten this lead a week sooner would things have been different. You can imagine the disappointment that we were both feeling. This job literally was everything he and I both wanted. I remember wishing we had never even heard about the opportunity because every rejection he received evoked such powerful emotions for him that it made him question his value. At that point, we were both exhausted from his job search. All we knew to do was continue praying. I remember many sleepless night nights when all I did was ask God over and over to reveal His perfect will for our lives.

About a week after all that happened, my husband received a phone call from the recruiter at the Fortune 500 Company. They wanted to interview him. To our surprise, the candidate that they had chosen had said something inappropriate during negotiations, and they elected to rescind their offer. The company flew my husband up for the interview and made him an offer within two weeks. The salary was right, the location was right, and the job description was right. Everything about it seemed ideal. That perfect peace that I did not have on the last job offer, I had found with this one.

We thought the door had been closed, but little did we know, God was planning on reopening it all along. He probably used that whole situation to kill two birds with one stone. He was teaching us to wait on Him, and He taught that other candidate a lesson on what not to say in an interview. As much as we want to believe our life here on this earth is all about us, it’s not.

Are you waiting on God right now? If so, all He expects you to do is hold on to your faith. Do your best and let him do the rest. Let me ask you though… Are you really doing your best? Are you being proactive in your job search, networking with the right people, writing your resume to the job you are applying for, and being a good steward of what you have been given? If you are not doing your best with all these things, maybe God is giving you time to learn from your mistakes.

When a door appears closed, don’t assume it is closed forever. When you invite God into your job search, you never know what could happen. He tells us, upfront in the Bible, that His ways are different than our ways. If we understood His ways, that would mean we could figure Him out. If we could figure Him out, that would mean He is just like us… human. He is not human. He is the one and only Almighty God, Creator of the whole universe. He saves the day, right in the nick of time, on purpose, so we HAVE to give Him the glory. Any other way and we would try to take credit for the victory ourselves. Have faith that if God really wants you to have a specific job, He will cause that door to open, no matter what the situation.

Now speaking of doors opening and closing… This blog will be my last blog for I/O. I want to thank each one of you for following me for the last few years. I never saw myself as a blogger/writer, so this job was always a bit of a challenge for me. I will still be assisting jobseekers as I am able. For those of you that would like my new email address for the future it is carbiak@yahoo.com. For your information Innovative Outsourcing is going to start utilizing facebook and twitter to communicate more with everyone. Watch your emails for more information .

May God bless continue to bless you in your job search. Always put Him first, and He will reveal His plans for you, in His time.

Have you ever felt like you woke up one morning and the yellow-brick road of your life veered off into the twilight zone? I know I have. There have been several moments in my life where suddenly I realized life would never be the same. And I was on a totally different path than I ever imagined I would be on. Some curveballs in life are great especially when we benefit from them, like winning the lottery or getting an unexpected raise or promotion at work. Then there are those disappointing or scary curveballs like when we get laid off, or have a health crisis, or get pregnant at age 42. We never seem to ask Him “why”, when positive things occur in our lives, but we are always buried in questions when life throws us a major challenge that we don’t want to deal with.

If we all looked at our lives as being part of His big story, I think our perspective on curveballs would change drastically. Over time, I have come to see my life as a book divided into many chapters, all filled with God’s divine interruptions. You’ve probably figured out by now that you can’t get through life without storms. Jesus made that very clear in the New Testament. And if you stop and think about it, most biblical people who made a lasting mark in history, had a point/storm in their lives where they also had to make a choice to yield to God’s divine interruption.

The most common divine interruption that seems to be hitting most people the hardest right now is unemployment. The biggest challenge I am seeing people struggle with is that so many men and women have made the mistake of finding their significance and/or identity in their job. And if their significance depends on what they do, and they are no longer working, what do you suppose that does to their self-esteem? Take a look at some of these testimonials below.

Chris Evert is the former number one tennis player in the world. She became a household name by the age of 16. She won just about every prize she competed for and yet this is what she said of herself: “I had no idea who I was, or what I could be away from tennis. Winning made me feel like somebody. It made me feel pretty. I needed the wins and the applause in order to have an identity.”

Oprah Winfrey has been one of the most successful and powerful woman in the world for more than 25 years. She has influenced millions of people and attained wealth that most people can only dream of. Believe it or not, this is how she sees herself: “I discovered I didn’t feel worth anything, and certainly not worthy of love, unless I was accomplishing something. I suddenly realized I have never felt I could be loved for just being.”

None of us are able to remain in the same place for the rest of our lives. Change and aging is inevitable. Chris Evert had to know that someday she would no longer be the number one tennis player in the world. Oprah Winfrey had to know that the day would come when she was no longer a talk show host. Both of these ladies sadly believed the lie the world teaches us, that they were only special because of what they did for a short time.

Divine interruptions have a way of revealing what’s really in our hearts. We read the scripture “Lord, not my will but yours be done” but do we really feel that way? What if His perfect will for our lives makes us uncomfortable for a year or even two years? What if His perfect will allows us to lose our home due to financial stress?

The thing I love most about the Bible is the fact that we get to see the whole story. We get to see how Jonah struggled and ran from God, but most importantly, what happened when God got his attention at the end. We get to see what Noah did when God asked him to build the ark. We get to watch how a divine interruption not only changed Esther’s life forever but also changed the life of her people.

Maybe God is using a divine interruption in your life for His purpose. You see it as an inconvenience, but He sees the end of your wonderful story. Consider this… maybe God is choosing you to be his partner on a particular project or mission that you could only understand and grasp if you were in the middle of it yourself. I am asking you today to beg God to help you to no longer see His divine interruptions as derailment to your life but as divine invitations to help Him accomplish kingdom work.

You will never find significance in a job. No one ever has. But you will find GREAT significance in being obedient to God’s call on your life.

I think most jobseekers can relate to a morning that goes something like this… You wake up slowly, put on your slippers, grab a cup of coffee and a bagel, and you watch the news for a while. You tell yourself when the news is over “I’ll just watch a little Regis & Kelly and then I will work my way to the computer to start my job search for the day”. Before you know it, you find yourself watching The View, and it is already lunch time. Reality hits and you still have not had a shower, and more importantly, you have not accomplished a single thing all morning. Too many unproductive mornings like this, and you could cause yourself to be unemployed for much longer than you really need to be.

I know how easy it is to fall into this pattern because I do it occasionally myself. Working from home offers a lot of flexibility. Flexibility, as you probably know, can be a good thing for people that are disciplined but can also be a very bad thing for those that are not. The first year I began working from home, I found it very challenging to get myself into a regular work schedule. If I am being honest, I usually wasted my morning with TV and found myself cramming too much into my afternoon which caused me great stress by the time my kids got home from school. I finally realized after the first six months that I needed to create a schedule for myself and hold myself accountable to it. I decided I needed to wake up with the rest of the family, eat breakfast, and then immediately get ready for the day. I was showered, dressed and ready to walk out the door, if the opportunity presented itself. The days of wasting my mornings away were gone.

I often tell folks when they get laid off or fired that they should give themselves only one week from the day it happens to go through their emotions of anger and grief. After that, it’s time to shave their lay off beard and get rid of those evil bunny slippers. Getting too comfortable on your couch could lead to things like depression, procrastination, low self-esteem and laziness. Catch yourself before you fall into that pit. If you already have, it’s time to break that nasty pattern today and customize a schedule for your week that will propel you toward your employment goals.

I am sitting here typing this blog with so much emotion pouring out of my soul that my brain is thinking faster than my hands can type. God has done something so extraordinary again, and I have to share it with you.

Many of you have heard me talk in the past about my homeless friend Michael Jones. If you are not familiar with his story, perhaps you might want to go back and read two of my other blogs entitled “Never Doubt God’s Ways” and “Are You Living Up To Your Potential”. There you will be able to learn more about Michael’s story and his current situation through a video we created for the show “The Biggest Loser”. Michael is an extremely overweight size 6X homeless man with severe health problems. He is so large he has to sleep sitting up at the homeless shelter where he stays because there is not a bed suitable for him.

From the moment I met Michael, I knew he needed God’s love in his life. I felt God calling me to pray for him like I have never prayed for anyone before. It probably sounds odds to you that I would be led to pray for a complete stranger, and that is OK, because it was and is still odd to me, too. I felt an immediate draw to Michael that compelled me to help him in any way that God asked me to. Over the last year or so that I have known Michael God has allowed me to be part of his life in very special ways. He has blessed me by allowing me to be a small part of several miracles that have happened for Michael over the last few months.

After God used the NBA to provide Michael his size 20 shoe, I believed God had something still much bigger in store for him. After much prayer and thought, I got the idea in the middle of the night to create a video and submit Michael as a candidate on the show “The Biggest Loser”. I knew that Michael needed around the clock medical care, counseling, a place to live because he was homeless, and a nutritionist to change his life. I repeatedly emailed the video to the show sharing his story, and over and over all I received back was a candid response saying thanks for your interest…… We’ll let you know if we are interested. You can imagine our disappointment. We had all just about given up hope when, to my surprise, today I received this email.

Hi Kim,

I know in a prior season you sent us the story of Michael Jones. We are going to be coming to Atlanta on August 6th, and if Michael is interested in meeting us, I have included a front of the line VIP pass. I have also attached the casting flyer.

Michael’s story is both sad and compelling. It will be nice to meet him, and at least consider him for the upcoming season, if he is still interested. I can’t guarantee anything, but we’d at least like to meet him.

Also, if you think there are others who’d like this opportunity feel free to pass along the flyer, but not the front of the line passes. Thank you for submitting Michael.

If there is one thing I have learned over the years it is that persistence in life is everything! My heart is jumping for joy, not only for Michael, but because God has been so loving to all of us through providing for Michael. He not only met his needs but he has provided abundantly for Michael. God has proven to me, again and again, that His ways and timing are best and that we are ALL to wait on Him for everything.

Michael knows he still has a long way to go. There is no guarantee he will even make it on the show. He is still homeless and severely overweight, but he has been given hope from his heavenly father once again. Knowing God like I do, He will be carrying Michael all the way, just like the “Footprints” in the sand poem that we have all heard so many times before.

Do you need a miracle today? Do you feel like God has forgotten about you because he has not answered your prayer? Please… spiritually refuel from Michael’s journey. God is here. He hasn’t left you even for a second. Sometimes He chooses to be silent when He is testing us or growing us, but He is always here.

I hope Michael’s miracles give you hope in your life today. If you feel like God has forgotten or abandoned you, I promise He has not. Sometimes we say to ourselves “God knows what I need so I don’t really have to pray for it”. That could not be farther from the truth. Whether it is employment you seek, a marriage that needs healing, a country you are worried about or a disease that is wearing you down, God wants you to be completely reliant on Him every day for everything. Rely on Him… Every day for everything. Start being specific in your prayers and watch how, over time, God will answer them in the way that is BEST for you. Pray for his perfect will in your life, and you will receive the blessings He has in store for you.

Who is God to you? Is He just an emergency contact that you call on when you experience life’s quakes? Is He just a Genie in a bottle that you make all your wishes to and hope they come true from year to year? Or is He your Savior that you communicate with and praise DAILY regardless of your circumstances?

It took me years to figure out that my relationship with God was, to put it nicely, unstable and mostly one-sided at best. I was unknowingly ONLY using God in the 911 moments and when major life change was occurring in our lives. I did not have a loving, ongoing relationship with Him like He desires to have with all of His own. I praised him during the good times and begged Him to help me get out of the bad times, but it was all the in between times that He wanted me to come to Him, the most.

I think I came to the realization that I was missing out on a true relationship with God when I was doing a Bible study called “Discerning the Voice of God” by Priscilla Schirer. That was categorically the most powerful Bible study I have ever done. The concept behind the study impacted me so much, the first day I knew my life would never be the same. I concluded after the first video, that if I wanted a true relationship with God, things were going to have to change drastically. To hear God’s voice and to know His plan for my life, each and every day I was going to need to invite Him into every aspect of my life from the biggest moments to the smallest decisions. I also decided I was going to praise Him at all times, during times of great blessing and during times of trial. Praying to Him throughout my day was challenging at first, but learning how to praise Him during the storms of my life was an even bigger challenge.

It’s easy to praise God when He answers our prayers quickly the way we want Him to, but it’s not easy when He is quiet or when He answers our prayers differently than we would like. We often conclude that Him not answering our prayers means He has forgotten about us or does not care about our hurts. That could not be further from the truth. If you have been wandering through the unemployment wilderness for a while you may be able to relate to what I am saying all too well.

When my house flooded years ago, I was overwhelmed with emotion, and praising God during that storm in my life was the last thing on my mind. Truthfully, I was questioning Him minute to minute for what he had allowed to happen to my family and my home. Two days after the flood I realized I had committed weeks prior to go watch a good friend’s daughter perform in a Christian ballet. I’ll just tell you candidly… I wanted to cancel so bad. I was not in the mood to go watch someone else’s child perform in a ballet when I had so many other pressing things on my mind. But I went anyway. The program was absolutely amazing. It was so powerful and so moving that I knew beyond all doubt that God had orchestrated that divine moment for me weeks before the flood because He knew the encouragement I would need to get through that storm in my life. By the end of the performance, it was so clear to me that this performance was a gift from Him to me, that gave me great peace. I was so filled with Awe of who He was that I could not help but stand up with tears in my eyes, raising my hands to heaven praising Him for who He was. The dancers had conveyed God’s love so beautifully and powerfully through their performance. I realized that night, that why I praise Him has nothing to do with my circumstances. I praise Him because of who He is and what He has done for me. My circumstances will constantly change and that is ok, because I know He is and always will be the same.

This morning in church we sang one of my favorite praise songs. It is called “Be My Everything”. Click here www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V0rgrt1nTM if you would like to listen to it.

Be My Everything
God in my living
There in my breathing
God in my waking
God in my sleeping

God in my resting
There in my working
God in my thinking
God in my speaking

Be my everything
Be my everything
Be my everything
Be my everything

God in my hoping
There in my dreaming
God in my watching
God in my waiting

God in my laughing
There in my weeping
God in my hurting
God in my healing

Christ in me
Christ in me
Christ in me the hope of glory
You are everything

Christ in me
Christ in me
Christ in me the hope of glory
Be my everything!

That song really says it all. Every time I sing it I can’t help but raise my hands to my Savior who is truly everything to me. When He allows me to go through storms in this life He always offers me His perfect peace every time. I truly believe the pain in this life is a reminder that this world is not our home and we were created for something so much better.

What kind of relationship do you have with your heavenly father? He died so He could be your everything. Maybe your faith has been so shaken by your circumstances that you have forgotten who He is. Here are just a few “names” given to God in the Bible that tell us so much about Him and His character.

•	El Shaddai - Almighty God is all-sufficient and all-powerful. (Genesis 17:1-3; Psalm 90:2)

•	Adonai - “The Lord is majestic.” (Psalm 8; Ezekiel 16:8; Habakkuk 3:19)

•	Emmanuel – “God with us.” (Isaiah 7:14, 8:8-10)

•	Yahweh or Jehovah - “I AM” and the God who never changes. (Exodus 3:14, 6:2-4; Psalm 102)

•	When Time is no more, He was and is and will always be the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the Prince of Peace, and the Son of Man, the Lamb of God and the Great I Am. He is the Alpha and Omega and God our Savior. He is Jesus Christ the Lord.

He is the one and only majestic Lord of comfort… who will ALWAYS be with you, and He will NEVER change. I promise you, in scripture, you will find He is everything that you need. Everything!

Who is God to you? I believe He doesn’t want to be anything But your EVERYTHING.

Do you believe it is possible that the same prayer said by a simple herdsman thousands of years ago, could bring blessing and abundance to your life today? Whatever your answer, continue reading and decide at the end of this blog. The ancient prayer of Jabez is a powerful prayer that people all over the world are praying today. Many men and women have experienced meaningful answers to their prayers so I decided to try this prayer for myself.

In case you don’t know, Jabez was a simple herdsman that was briefly talked about in the Bible. If you blink you could miss his story. He appears to me to be an average “Joe” just like you and me. He was never heralded in scripture for anything great, like some, yet I believe God thought so much of Jabez’s prayer that he included it in the Bible as a model for us to use when we pray. The fact that he was not a hero, a king, or a preacher, gives people like you and I hope that our dreams and aspirations matter to God.

This is all we know about Jabez and his story.

“Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, ‘Because I bore him in pain.’ And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, ‘Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain.’ So God lifted Jabez up out of the ordinary and granted him what he requested”. 1 Chronicles 4:9-10

Pretty short, sweet and straight forward – huh. At first glance, this prayer may seem like four very simple requests, but I assure you, hidden between the lines are biblical and life-changing principals that if applied in your prayer time could change your life.

The first thing I noticed when I read this was that his mother named him after the pain he caused her during childbirth. Back in those days, a man’s name was viewed as prophecy about what he would achieve in his lifetime. Can you imagine going through life with this description attached to you? He basically had a Scarlett letter on his forehead that he was destined to cause others pain. You and I both know how difficult life can be, even in the best of circumstances, so having this name had to have been a heavy burden for Jabez to bare his whole life.

Despite the label that was given to him at birth, he believed something about his God that changed the path of his life. His story quickly shows that the prophecy that was laid upon him by his mother did NOT come true. In fact, just the opposite occurred because of Jabez’s belief in God’s desire to bless his own. God did not feel the need to tell us all the ways he answered prayers in Jabez’s life, but he made sure to tell us that because Jabez was an honorable man, God granted him what he requested.

Do you think about God the same way Jabez did? Do you think that he truly desires to bless you abundantly? Do you have the faith and courage to ask him to bless you indeed? Jesus said “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you.” He says everyone (including you) who asks will receive, and everyone (including you) who seeks finds, and to him who knocks (including you) the door will be opened.

This sounds too good to be true, I’ll admit. But this is His truth. Everything about Jesus is so simple but because of our humanity we make it complicated. If God says it, it is true. Honestly, I was a little afraid to pray this prayer for a few reasons. I was afraid that I might not hear anything, and I was also afraid He would ask me to do something I felt I was incapable of or did not want to do. I think you can probably relate to at least one of those. I finally concluded that THAT had to be Satan trying to prevent me from experiencing all I can from God here on this earth. With a bit of hesitation, I prayed this prayer the first time with my whole family several months ago.

When I ask God to bless us indeed, I have to remind myself that this is not a selfish request, and that God’s nature is to bless. He wants to bless His own. When I ask God to enlarge our territory, it makes us conscious of our current circle of influence, as well as the fact that we ALL have a mission here on this earth. When I ask that God’s hand would remain with us at all times, it reminds us that we have access to him ALL the time, not just in the 911 moments. It also reminds us that he wants to be part of all our life decisions, the large and the small. When I ask him to keep my family from evil temptations, it reminds me that He will keep our path straight which will therefore will eliminate a lot of sins temptations.

After praying this prayer a few times, I began to get it… that God wants to be in every aspect of my life, every minute of every day. He wants to bless me and my family abundantly forever. He wants us to commit to His work here on this earth. He wants to protect us from ourselves, and because He knew it was impossible for us to do this on our own, He secured a way for each of us to make it to Him someday.

I am no longer a skeptic when it comes to the prayer of Jabez. Over the last month, I have found my territory being expanded beyond anything I could ever imagine. Honestly, I am a little scared, but I know if I do what is possible, God will take care of the rest. I have been presented with an amazing opportunity to be a mentor at The Hope Center in Woodstock. I was also given opportunities to substitute teach at ladies Bible study this quarter. If you knew me and my fear of being inadequate in sharing my faith, you would understand what a big deal these opportunities are for me. (Writing this blog is also a HUGE challenge for me every month, but God always comes through at the last minute, with a fresh word for me to share with you.)

My husband and I have also seen God’s hand in another aspect of our life over the last few months. We were both presented with the opportunity to lead a Community Employment Resources Event in June that will take place at Piedmont Church in Marietta. This also seems way too BIG for my husband and I to take on, but when God is in it, nothing is impossible! We are counting on Him to bring employers with jobs and community resources that will bless, hopefully, hundreds of jobseekers.

When I analyze these scriptures the only reason I see as to why God lifted Jabez up out of the ordinary and granted him what he requested was because he was an honorable man. Are you living a life that would be considered honorable in God’s eyes? If you are not, you need to start there. Ask God to help you want what He wants for your life. Then, I would love for you to commit to praying a prayer like Jabez’s for a few weeks. I don’t know how God will choose to answer your prayers because meaningful answers will look different for each of us.

Come on… Give it a try… because you have nothing to lose – and everything to gain!

Don’t put all your job-hunting eggs in the Internet Job board basket. This is one of the most commons mistakes a job seeker can make. Job-hunting on the internet should only make up about 50% of your job search. Job Seekers should spend just as much of their time, if not more, networking.

Many job openings are never even advertised or publicly announced, and are filled through word-of-mouth referrals. These invisible jobs are known as the “hidden job market” and you can ONLY reach this gold mine of jobs by networking.

I’ll give you a great example of when networking worked for me. When I decided to go back to work, the first thing I did was tell my friends at bible study. Right after I shared my prayer request with the group, a woman I barely knew spoke up and told me she wanted to put me in touch with the owner of a staffing company. To my surprise, that lead was priceless, and I have been with Innovative Outsourcing now for a little over three years.

The word networking usually intimidates people and they “cringe” at just the thought of it. But as you can see, it is actually a very simple concept that simply means talking to people. We can all do that easily. Here are some great examples of situations that are perfect for networking. Hopefully, you can find a few that will work for you.

• Talking to other parents when attending your child’s school functions or sporting events
• Visiting with members of social clubs or religious groups
• Talking to neighbors at the pool
• Striking up a conversation with someone while waiting at the doctor’s office
• Posting a message on Facebook or LinkedIn
• Attending professional or trade association meetings

Networking can be as formal or as informal as you would like for it to be. None of these situations are that intimidating, in fact, you do most of them every day without thinking. Take a chance. Put yourself out there. You never know, your next job could be just a conversation away!

Resume Coaching – $50
This is an opportunity for an experienced staffing professional to review your resume and make suggestions for improvement. Since this piece of paper is often the only chance you have to “open that door”, it is critical that it does the best job possible of making you shine.

I have a riddle for you.

I can be your greatest strength or your greatest weakness;
I can push you forward or drag you down;
I am easily managed if you are aware of me, but I can also get out of control quickly;
Those who are great, I have made great;
Those that are failures, I have made failures;
What am I?

Give up?

I am a habit.

According to Wikipedia a habit is defined as a routine behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously. Because habits can be attributed to our successes as well as our failures, it is essential that you are conscious of the habits you want to break as well as the habits you want to develop.

As many of you may already know, it is very easy to develop bad habits when you are unemployed and searching for a job. I know this from my own experience as well as from speaking to hundreds of jobseekers over the years. The most common bad habits that you need to watch out for when you are unemployed are:

1.	Finding yourself reacting emotionally rather than rationally to obstacles you are facing.
2.	Becoming a victim and blaming your problems on the world.
3.	Being unwilling to take responsibility for your personal finances and decisions.
4.	Allowing yourself to be scattered in your search for employment with no clear goals or focus.
5.	Allowing daily planning to be overcome by depression and laziness.
6.	Procrastinating and allowing priorities to shift causing reruns of Seinfeld & Judge Judy to become more important than crafting a quality resume.
7.	Allowing facebook and other social media websites to distract and consume you.
8.	Allowing negativity to creep into your every day conversations with friends and family.

Looking for a job with these bad habits is like brushing your teeth while eating oreos. You’re never going to get anywhere! Do you see yourself falling into any of these bad habits? These behaviors are a recipe for life disaster, yet unfortunately, we all succumb to them at times. Let today be a wakeup call for you. Psychologists say most habits can be broken in 30 days or less so don’t let another day go by. Make a list of all your habits, good and bad. Be honest. Ask yourself will these habits set me up for success or failure? Don’t let the old saying “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” get to you. With God’s help, it is never too late in your life to exchange a bad habit for a better one. Samuel Smiles said it best when he said:

Sow a thought, and you reap an act;
Sow an act, and you reap a habit;
Sow a habit, and you reap character;
Sow character, and you reap destiny.

When you look in the mirror do you like what you see? That might sound like a simple question, but I want you to really think about it before you answer. I have talked to so many people that have told me they don’t even recognize the person looking back at them anymore. If we are honest with ourselves, most of us would agree, that we have been on autopilot for too long. We are no longer the person we were created to be, but we are the person we have allowed ourselves to become.

Psychologists tell us that we are a product of our environment, but the Bible tells us otherwise. God’s word clearly states that we have all been given extraordinary gifts and talents and what we choose to do with these is up to us. Your distinct personality, talents, and passions were breathed into you the day you were born. Each were given to you in advance, on purpose, by God, to help you create the best life for you here on this earth. The individuality that makes up who you are, is evidence of His unique thumbprint on your life. Each of our “one of a kind” thumbprints are what sets us apart from each other and makes us who we are as His children.

The good news is… we all have these gifts embedded in our soul. The bad news is… many of you have chosen a path or career that does not compliment the gifts he has given you, which means you are not living up to your potential. When you are working against his thumbprint, everyday feels like you are chasing a moving target. Are you utilizing the talents you have been given or is it possible that you took a wrong turn years ago, for all the wrong reasons, which has caused chaos and confusion in your life?

If you don’t like who you have become there is hope. If you want to get back to the person that He has called you to be, you have to be willing to say so long to yourself. You have to be willing to take risks to answer His call for your life. I really believe that figuring out His thumbprint in your life will lead you to your destiny.

If you are lost and depressed over the circumstances of your life and you don’t know what to do, I want to suggest something. Stop dwelling so much on your own problems and open your eyes to all that is going on around you. There is a much bigger picture that you are missing. God uses difficult times to get our attention. Right now, you may just want God to answer your simple prayer for a new job, but He wants something so much greater. Matthew West says it best in his song “My Own Little World”. Start praying this prayer out loud daily and watch what opportunities will come your way.

What if there’s a bigger picture,
What if I’m missing out,
What if there’s a greater purpose I could be living right now
outside my own little world.

Start breaking my heart for what breaks yours,
Give me open hands and open doors,
Put your light in my eyes and let me see,
That my own little world is not about me.

That last line in this song is a killer… “That my own little world is not about me“. Finding yourself means putting God’s work first. When we get depressed, we think everything revolves around us and it doesn’t. If you are stuck in that mode, stop spinning your wheels like a hamster in a cage. Ask God to give you open hands, an open heart and open doors. My prayer for you this week is from Ephesians 1:18. “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you.”
